Teacher’s aide accused of assaulting 5-year-old autistic boy
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Police say a South Carolina teacher’s aide grabbed a 5-year-old autistic child by the arm, pulled him down the steps and threw him on his back across the school hallway.
News outlets report that 37-year-old Brittany A. Bell, who worked at Summit Drive Elementary School in Greenville, turned herself in to police Wednesday. She is charged with cruelty to children.
A police report says several teachers saw the boy being assaulted last Friday afternoon during school hours.
Authorities say the child had fingertip bruises on his forearm. The boy’s father told police his son also had an injury to his back.
District officials say Bell is no longer an employee of the school district. It is unclear whether she has an attorney.
