American Robin Carpenter retains Province of Alberta jersey, wins Tour of Alberta

EDMONTON – American Robin Carpenter is the winner of the 2016 Tour of Alberta.

Carpenter, who rides for Holowesko-Citadel, completed the five-day 580-kilometre event in 13 hours 35 minutes 31 seconds to capture the Province of Alberta jersey on Monday.

Dutch rider Bauke Mollema of Trek-Segafredo cycling came in a close second place (13:35:32), finishing one second behind Carpenter.

American Evan Huffman, of Rally Cycling, held the Province of Alberta jersey after Stage 3 but dropped it to Carpenter and placed third overall (13:35:38).

Ottawa’s Alexander Cataford of Silber Pro Cycling won the Best Canadian jersey with a fifth-place finish. (13:36:03).

American Colin Joyce, who held the Province of Alberta jersey after Stage 2, finished fifth overall (13:35:49). The Axeon Hagen Berman rider still claimed the Sprint jersey and Best Young Rider jersey for his efforts.

Italian Danilo Celano of Amore & Vita-Selle SMP won the King of the Mountain jersey. He finished well back in 61st place (13:55:55).

The final stage on Monday consisted of a 124.1-kilometre trek around the city of Edmonton. Spain’s Francisco Mancebo was the fastest rider of the day (2:46:01). He finished 81st overall.
