FREDERICTON – Federal New Brunswick politician Keith Ashfield says he will run in the upcoming election after beating cancer.
In a letter to his constituents, the Fredericton MP says his doctors have informed him that his non-Hodgkin lymphoma is in remission and tests have shown no signs of remaining cancer.
Ashfield says the last several months have been physically and emotionally taxing, but he now has a renewed sense of purpose and determination.
The Conservative MP was first elected in 2008.
In June 2013, he asked the prime minister to excuse him from his cabinet role as fisheries minister to focus on treatment and recovery after he was diagnosed with the disease.
He then returned to work later that year after healing, but began battling a recurrence of the cancer last fall.
