2 adolescents sentenced to 4 years each in slaying of actress who was ex-Miss Venezuela

CARACAS, Venezuela – Two boys ages 15 and 17 have been sentenced to four years each in the killing of actress and former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear along with her ex-husband.

The country’s top prosecutor’s office says the adolescents were sentenced earlier this week. Three other people were previously sentenced in the case to prison terms ranging from 24 to 26 years. Five other people still await trial.

The 29-year-old Spear and former husband Thomas Henry Berry, a 39-year-old British citizen, were shot to death resisting a robbery on Jan. 6, 2014, alongside a highway about 170 kilometres (105 miles) west of Caracas. Their then 5-year-old daughter was shot in the leg.

Venezuela is among the most violent countries in Latin America.
