New foreign minister appointed in Estonia

TALLINN, Estonia – Estonia has appointed a new foreign minister to replace Marina Kaljurand, who resigned to run as a candidate in the Baltic country’s presidential election later this month.

Jurgen Ligi, who had held the education and science portfolio in Prime Minister Taavi Roivas’ three-party, centre-right Cabinet, moved ministries and took office immediately on Monday.

The 57-year-old Ligi, a long-time lawmaker in Roivas’ ruling Reform Party, has been defence and finance minister in previous governments.

Reform Party lawmaker Maris Lauri was appointed to replace him as the new education and science minister.
