Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak ousted in first round at National Bank Cup

QUEBEC – Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak didn’t last long in the main draw at the National Bank Cup.

Wozniak was eliminated on Monday by American Jessica Pegula in first-round action at the event being held at Laval University.

Pegula took the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

“This is the kind of match that I need to win to break the ice,” said Wozniak.

“I want to play and I am going to continue doing everything I can to move up the rankings.”

Wozniak wasn’t the only Canadian to suffer first-round defeat as Carol Zhao fell 6-3, 6-2 to American qualifier Lauren Davis.

In doubles, Canada’s Francoise Abanda and her partner Elena Bovina of Russia beat Naomi Broady and Sanaz Marand 6-1, 6-7 (3), 12-10.

Canadian Eugenie Bouchard will play her first-round doubles match alongside partner Pegula on Tuesday against Russian Alla Kudryavtseva and her American partner Jacqueline Cako.

Abanda will follow in her opening singles match against Mona Barthel of Germany.
