Concerns over fake passports prompts German security review
BERLIN – Germany’s top security official has ordered a review of the way migrants’ passports are scrutinized, after some fake documents were reportedly overlooked.
Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere announced the review Monday following reports that some of Germany’s 16 states were unhappy about the existing vetting procedure carried out by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.
Several migrants have entered Europe using Syrian passports produced by forgers working for the Islamic State group. Last week, Germany arrested three men who are suspected of entering the country with the intention of carrying out attacks on the group’s behalf.
The Interior Ministry says federal and state officials will meet to discuss the issue this week.
