BCE said net income attributable to shareholders in the first quarter was $532 million, down 13.5 per cent from the same time last year — largely due to a one-time, $137-million expense related to its court battle with Quebecor over satellite TV piracy.

The Calgary-based company posted a $248-million net loss in the first quarter as the mid-sized oil and gas producer felt the double impact of lower commodity prices and a weaker loonie. The net loss amounted to 49 cents per share, compared with a net loss of 18 cents per share or $89 million a year ago.
