New Kansas State University president Richard Myers says it was important to come home to Kansas after interim was dropped from his title.

The Kansas Board of Regents decided Tuesday that the 1965 Kansas State graduate should remain the school’s top leader. Myers is a retired four-star Air force general and the former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman.

He was named the interim successor in April after former president Kirk Schulz announced he was leaving the 24,000-student university to become Washington State University’s president. Myers joked after the vote that “the honeymoon is over.” He also said he “wouldn’t do this any other place.”

He previously had a part-time position at the school as a professor of military history and leadership. The military science building on campus is named for him.

The Kansas Board of Regents has begun a meeting to choose a new president for Kansas State University after a months-long search.

The nine-member board convened its special meeting Tuesday on the campus of the roughly 24,000-student university’s main campus in Manhattan.

Former president Kirk Schulz announced in March he was leaving the university after seven years at the helm to become Washington State University’s president.

Kansas State alumnus Richard Myers, a retired four-star Air force general and the former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman, has been Schulz’s interim successor.

Earlier reports had indicated the committee tasked with selecting Schulz’s permanent successor narrowed the 81-applicant field to 15 candidates.

The regents are to gather Tuesday morning on Kansas State’s campus in Manhattan to vote on approving the new president of the roughly 24,000-student university.
