Pakistan: Cross-border fire kills 1 in Kashmir

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s army says Indian troops using heavy weapons have targeted civilians from across the Line of Control in the disputed region of Kashmir, killing one villager and wounded 4 others.

A military statement said Monday that Pakistani troops reacted with a “befitting response,” returning fire at the Indian forces.

There was no immediate reaction from India but both sides often accuse each other of initiating gunfire exchanges in Kashmir in violation of a 2003 cease-fire agreement.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Indian deputy envoy over the “unprovoked ceasefire violations”.

The disputed Himalayan region is split between Pakistan and India. The two nuclear armed neighbours claim the territory in its entirety and have fought two of their three wars over it since their independence from British rule in 1947.
