Belleville Senators fall short against Utica Comets in season opener

UTICA, N.Y. – Richard Bachman made 31 saves as the Utica Comets beat the Belleville Senators 3-1 on Saturday night.

Joseph LaBate scored the lone goal for Belleville (0-1-0) in its American Hockey League season opener. Mike McKenna made 26 saves for the Senators.

Brendan Gaunce, Reid Boucher and Darren Archibald scored for the Comets (1-1-0).

LaBate opened the scoring early in the second period, but Gaunce tied it just 10 seconds later. Boucher scored the winner on the power play with 56 seconds left in the second.

Belleville heads to Winnipeg for two games against the Manitoba Moose next weekend.
