Novels by Elena Ferrante, Julio Cortazar among nominees for translation prize

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Novels by Italian author Elena Ferrante and the late Argentine Julio Cortazar were among 10 fiction finalists for the Best Translated Book Award.

The online literary resource Three Per cent also announced six poetry nominees Tuesday. Through an Amazon.com grant, the winning writers and translators in the two categories each receive $5,000.

Ferrante was nominated for “Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay,” translated by Ann Goldstein. Ferrante is a pen name for one of Italy’s most mysterious writers; no one in the general public knows her real identity.

Cortazar was nominated for the 1975 novel “Fantomas Versus the Multinational Vampires,” translated from Spanish by David Kurnick.

Poetry nominees included Suzanne Doppelt’s “Lazy Susan,” translated from French by Cole Swenson.

Winners will be announced May 27.
