UK man charged with inventing claim of VIP pedophile ring

LONDON – Prosecutors say a British man who alleged he was abused by a ring of politically powerful pedophiles has been charged with inventing the claims.

The man, identified only as Nick, sparked a major police investigation with claims that prominent people in British politics and law enforcement sexually abused children and committed several murders in the 1970s and 80s.

Police raided the homes of retired Field Marshal Edwin Bramall and former politicians Harvey Proctor and Leon Brittan. But the Metropolitan Police closed its investigation in 2016 without any arrests or charges.

A report said police had made “numerous errors,” including placing too much faith in the sole complainant.

The Crown Prosecution Service said Tuesday that 50-year-old Nick faces 12 charges of perverting the course of justice and one fraud count.
