Rio police after 9 suspects after killing of Italian tourist

RIO DE JANEIRO – Police say they are seeking nine suspects including a drug trafficking boss in the killing of an Italian tourist shot dead in a Rio de Janeiro slum.

Investigator Fabio Cardoso told a news conference Friday that the man who killed tourist Roberto Bardella is believed to be linked to drug traffickers in the Morro dos Prazeres favela. The area is fought over by rival gangs.

Fellow Italian tourist Rino Polato was found unharmed Thursday at the slum’s entrance. The men were touring South America on motorcycles that were later found in the favela.

Police have been attacked in the favela several times in recent years.
