Mexican female senator, ex-Olympian, beaten

MEXICO CITY – Mexican senator and Olympic silver medallist Ana Guevara says she was beaten by unknown assailants after a traffic accident near Mexico City.

Guevara said Tuesday she was riding her motorcycle on a highway leading to the capital on Monday when a vehicle hit her bike.

The senator says she ordered the driver of the vehicle to stop, then four men got out and beat and kicked her.

She suffered wounds to her cheek bone and face, and was severely bruised.

Guevara won the silver medal in the 400-meter race in the 2004 Athens Olympic games. She retired from sports in 2008 and was elected to Mexico’s senate in 2012 for the small opposition Labor Party.

The Attorney General’s Office says it is investigating the attack.
