City of Vernon actively creating more parking lots

VERNON – The City of Vernon continues to open up more parking spaces in the downtown core.

After selling off the Bennett Lot on 29 Avenue, the site of a new multi-storey care home, the city has purchased a lot at 2901 33 Ave. to add more parking to the downtown core. The city bought the land for $345,000.

Additional parking will also come available with the demolition of a city-owned building on 31 Avenue, the former flower shop.

The city operates several other parking lots, including the parkade on 31 Avenue, a lot on 30 Street across from Greyhound, and outside City Hall. The city also plans to establish a parking area on 29 Street near the library. A city-owned building on that street, the former New Delhi Restaurant and the current site of the Open Door Learning Centre, is earmarked for demolition as well.

In city-owned parking lots, rates are 50 cents per hour, or $4 per day. Lots are free for parking after 5 p.m. on weekdays, and at all times on weekends.
