Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuaron to head jury at Venice film festival Sept. 2-12

MILAN – The Venice film festival says it has selected Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuaron to head the jury that will select this year’s winner of the festival’s coveted Golden Lion award.

The Mexican director returns to Venice where “Gravity” made its premiere as the opening film in the festival two years ago, before going on to win Oscars in the best director and best film editing categories.

The Venice Biennale called Cuaron, 53, “one of the most celebrated directors of his generation,” and praised his ground-breaking techniques in the 2006 film “Children of Men,” which premiered in Venice and was nominated for three Oscars. “Gravity” received 10 Oscar nominations, and took in more than 700 million dollars (euros) at the box office.

The Biennale Venice film festival runs Sept. 2 to 12.
