VIDEO: West Kelowna moose rescue ends with bruised rescuer

WEST KELOWNA – A local man is a little worse for wear after helping out a distressed moose in his West Kelowna backyard last week.

Marc Schoene says on Friday, Feb. 12, a moose got stuck in the wire fence at his home.

“It tried to jump over the fence,” Schoene says. “It was a calf moose, not a full-sized moose."

Acting quickly, Schoene asked his neighbour for cutters to snip the wire fence and help the animal escape. While the calf patiently let him free its leg from the wire, he soon found himself on the receiving end of a moose attack.

“I kept eye contact so I wouldn’t turn my back towards it,” he says. “Then it just looked at me and ran towards me with its hooves in the air."

Schoene says he spun around and received a few swift kicks in his shoulder and his lower back.

He says others advised him to call conservation to help the animal get out of the fence tangle, but adds the animal would have been in distress for longer.

“Why let something suffer if I can help it right now,” he says.
