Deloitte consultant says Saskatchewan potash, uranium shifting to growth

SASKATOON – A consultant with Deloitte says Saskatchewan’s mining industry needs to take advantage of a recovering market.

Andrew Swart told the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday that gold and copper markets are recovering after a few years of decline, and the potash and uranium markets are expected to turn in a positive direction in the next few years.

He says mining companies should focus on bringing the digital world into their work, and target their financial situation to ensure they maximize profits during their recovery.

He says Saskatchewan has a wealth of natural resources thatcould attract more foreign and Canadian investors.

Swart says companies will need to focus on coming up with new ideas and methods.

“Innovation is and will continue to be a really important area, because it allows companies to drive step-change in performance in their current operations,” Swart said.

“Incremental improvements or continuous improvement can only get you that far, but if you really want to make a step-change, you do have to do things differently, not better.”
