Charges laid after Manitoba RCMP officer wounded during domestic dispute call

KEMNAY, Man. – A man accused of wounding an RCMP officer in a shooting prior a standoff in western Manitoba has been charged with two counts of attempted murder.

The male officer suffered a non-life-threatening injury Friday evening while checking on a call about an alleged assault at a home in the small community of Kemnay, near Brandon.

Police say that when the officers arrived at the scene, they were threatened by a suspect before a gun was fired at them.

The Mountie who was hit has since been released from hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Clayton Ewert, a 48-year-old Kemnay resident, is also charged with assault, uttering threats to kill and two firearms-related counts.

Ewert was remanded in custody prior to an appearance in Brandon provincial court today.

A neighbour said after the shooting that he heard two shots that may have been from a rifle or a shotgun, and that an officer who had been loading a rifle outside the home ran from the scene.

The witness also said that about an hour and a half after police arrived, a man walked out of the house with his hands in the air and was ordered onto his knees by officers, who arrested him at gunpoint.
