Vernon firefighters rescue dog stuck under deck

VERNON – The Vernon Fire Department comes to the rescue of people in need — and sometimes animals too.

It wasn’t their biggest call of the year, but Vernon firefighters brought a lot of relief to a local dog owner Tuesday evening.

Deputy fire chief Jack Blair says the department was called out around 10:44 p.m. Feb. 23, for a report of a dog stuck under a sun deck.

“The guys went — we had some time — and lifted the deck using our airbags so it was high enough to get the dog to come out,” Blair says. “She was an older dog and disoriented.”

He notes most people probably wouldn’t call the fire department in this situation, but says when called for assistance ‘we go and try to do what we can.’

“I guess they needed some help,” Blair says. “They were not able to figure out a way to do it so they called the fire department. Just like a cat in a tree, this was a dog under a deck.”
