Countries are setting targets for GHG emissions for climate talks

OTTAWA – A quick look at what countries are saying about their climate change targets ahead of the G7 meeting in June and a world climate conference scheduled for Paris in December.

Canada: Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq saysCanada plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030.

United States: In a submission to the climate conference, Washington has repeated a pledge to reduce emissions by 26 to 28 per cent below 2005 levels by 2025.

Russia: Moscow uses 1990 as its baseline and says it aims to reduce emissions to 70 to 75 per cent of 1990 levels by 2030.

Europe: The European Union says it intends to cut emissions by at least 40 per cent below 1990 levels by 2030.

Britain: Under the terms of 2011 law, Britain aims at cutting emission by 50 per cent of 1990 levels by 2025, although this could change.

Japan: While the country is still preparing its 2030 targets for the Paris conference, news reports suggest Japan will likely set an emissions reduction target of 20 per cent below 2013 emission levels by 2030.
