MERRITT – It’s once again that time of year when prescribed burns are undertaken to reduce the risk of wildfire and some provincial parks will again be targeted this year.
B.C. Parks, along with wildfire crews, will be doing a prescribed burn on eight hectares in Monck Provincial Park in mid- to late-March, dependant on weather and site conditions.
Prescribed burns, which mimic naturally occurring ground fires and reduce the amount of dead and combustible materials, are aimed at restoring the area’s ecosystem, as well as reducing wildfire risks.
It is expected the smoke will be visible from Nicola Lakeshore Estates and properties west of the park, and possibly from Highway 5A.
