VANCOUVER – Mounties responsible for patrolling highways south of Vancouver credit some proactive drivers and two alert RCMP officers for averting a potentially nasty crash.
Sgt. Lorne Lecker with Deas Island Traffic Services says several 911 callers reported seeing a tractor-trailer unit swerving erratically on Highway 91 through north Delta early Monday.
Lecker says callers thought an impaired driver may be involved before officers located the big rig.
He says it was creeping along at barely 20 km/hr in a 100 km/hr zone, and officers quickly realized the 53-year-old driver from Chilliwack was having a medical crisis.
They managed to coax him to stop the truck and he was rushed to hospital by ambulance, where he remains.
Lecker applauds the drivers who called 911 and the Mounties who handled the emergency, saying everyone involved may have helped save the man’s life and the lives of others who could have been injured by an out-of-control truck.
