Hamilton’s Alena Sharp is the first official member of Canada’s golf team for the upcoming Rio Olympics.
Sharp announced that she would be representing Canada at the Games on Twitter late Sunday night after finishing tied for 21st at the U.S Women’s Open.
“Very happy and proud to have my best major finish in my career! And finally can say I’m an Olympian,” said Sharp from her verified Twitter account, adding two Canadian flag emojis.
Canada’s Olympic golf team will be announced in full on Monday. Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., is also expected to be named to the women’s team.
Golf has not been an Olympic sport since 1904 when George Lyon of Richmond, Ont., won gold in the men’s individual event. There was no women’s golf event at those Games.
