Kelowna RCMP stepping up enforcement to catch distracted drivers

KELOWNA – Local RCMP have kicked off a month-long enforcement campaign targeting distracted drivers and other motor vehicle infractions.

Earlier this week on March 1, uniformed and plainclothes officers kicked things off by setting up at various locations around Kelowna and issued more than 60 tickets.

RCMP handed out $167 fines to 31 people for using an electronic device while driving, 23 for not wearing seatbelts and 15 people were caught without valid driver’s licences or insurance.

“What was most surprising were the 64 offenses involving vehicle defects,” Const. Jesse O’Donaghey says in a media release. “The most common observed by officers were tinted windows, tinted licence plate covers, and licence plates not attached to the front of vehicles.”

Kelowna RCMP will continue with the enhanced enforcement campaign over the coming weeks.
