RCMP looking for driver who hit kid in West Kelowna crosswalk

WEST KELOWNA – Police are looking for help to find the driver who hit a student walking to school this morning in West Kelowna.

Around 9:20 a.m., today, March 4, the principal at Constable Neil Bruce Middle School called to say one of his students was hit by a vehicle, RCMP say.

The student was crossing Old Okanagan Highway at Daimler Road in the crosswalk when the driver of a westbound silver Toyota pickup “made contact” with the young man, according to a media release. The driver did not stop.

Police say the truck’s bumper made contact with the youth’s leg and he put up his hand to stop the impact. The student was taken to a medical clinic by his family and treated for minor injuries to his leg and wrist.

“At this time the West Kelowna RCMP are appealing for witnesses to come forward," Const. Jesse O'Donaghey says in the release. "We believe there were witnesses in the area who have not yet spoken to police.”

O’Donaghey says the driver may not be aware he hit the student.

If you witnessed this incident, or you believe you were the driver of the silver Toyota pickup truck you are urged to contact Const. Darwin Robbins of the West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.
