Fresh, new sand for popular Kelowna beach

KELOWNA – A large section of Rotary Beach on Lakeshore Drive is getting a fresh layer of sand just in time for spring.

The sand is being trucked in from a parking lot where it has been stored and sifted since it was removed from the Cook Street boat launch last fall.

The busy boat launch has been forced to close several times over the last six months as sand from nearby Mission Creek has accumulated.

Project manager Terry Barton told Global Okanagan the beach at Rotary has been gradually eroding over the last 30 or 40 years and it’s going to take roughly 60 dump truck loads of sand to repair.

The majority of the park and beach remain open while work continues over the next couple weeks at a cost of approximately $60,000.
