Regional District requests federal review panel for Ajax mine

KAMLOOPS – The Thompson Nicola Regional District will be sending a letter to the federal environment minister asking for a review panel for the proposed Ajax mine.

Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar says it’s a long shot since Minister of Environment Catherine McKenna said no to requests from the City of Kamloops and Stk'emlupsemc Te Secwepemc Nation last week.

“I pointed out that it’s fine we’re sending a letter, but with no new compelling reason to have a panel it’s not likely,” Milobar says, adding it's good to get the board's opinion on record.

The proposed copper and gold mine southwest of the city is currently in the public comment phase of the environmental assessment.

In her letter to the city McKenna says she can call for a review panel at a later date if she deems it necessary.
