Farm raided for second time in a month, animals seized

SORRENTO, Maine – State officials say they seized dozens of animals from a Maine farm for the second time this month.

Officials say they seized as many as 73 animals from the family farm in Sorrento on Thursday. The Bangor Daily News reports they removed the animals after an inspection last week.

Veterinarians are evaluating one alpaca sheep, two calves, four piglets, three goats, 10 rabbits and 40 to 50 chickens for malnutrition. Officials previously removed 44 animals from the farm on Dec. 5 after they discovered the animals living in bad conditions. In both cases, the animals were living in mud and their own feces.

The farm’s owner, Marc Calcia, has been charged with eight counts of criminal cruelty to animals. He said he was trying to comply with state standards.
