Changes to handicap parking on Nicola

KAMLOOPS – Complaints over inadequate space for dropping off or picking up of disabled persons at 321 Nicola St. has city staff looking at options for changing the parking in that area.

The issue first arose in November when People in Motion complained about the inadequate space, which often left the HandiDart having to stop in such a way it disrupts traffic. In February the item was brought before council and they agreed to have staff bring options forward.

Staff are now proposing several changes to parking in the area including the addition of two new handicap stalls on Nicola Street immediately in front of the building and relocating the loading zone onto 3 Avenue adjacent to the building. HandyDart vehicles would be allowed to use any of these spots.

These changes align better with the ramped portion already located adjacent to the building on 3 Avenue and a flat grade on Nicola Street, which is easier for pedestrians to navigate.

It is expected the changes, which will mostly consist of a change in signage, will happen within the next couple weeks.
