Reports: Mexican police officer slain in Sonoran border city

YUMA, Ariz. – Arizona media outlets report that an off-duty Mexican municipal police officer in a border city in the state of Sonora was gunned down after leaving work.

The Yuma Sun and KYMA-TV reported that 24-year-old Alex Iván Gámez Navarro was killed late Thursday night by rifle shots fired from another vehicle as he drove his personal vehicle in San Luis Rio Colorado.

The Sun reported that officers from three agencies searched for the attackers but made no immediate arrests.

The outlets reported that the killing occurred amid a spike in violence in the city and followed a Tuesday evening exchange of gunfire between police and other people.

The state prosecutor’s officer said a man killed in the Tuesday shootout was wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying an AK-47 assault rifle.
