Canadians help Yale University to NCAA lacrosse title with win over Duke

FOXBORO, Mass. – Canadian Matt Gaudet was named Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA men’s lacrosse championship Monday after helping Yale win the U.S. college title with a 13-11 win over the Duke Blue Devils.

The six-foot-one 220-pound sophomore from Hamilton, Ont., scored four goals in the championship game at Foxboro Stadium. Saskatoon’s Brendan Rooney added a single for the Bulldogs.

Gaudet, who set a Yale rookie record with 32 goals last year, also scored six goals in a 20-11 semifinal win over No. 2 Albany on Saturday. Duke knocked off No. 1 Maryland in the other semifinal.

Yale (17-3) was seeded third while Duke (16-4) was fourth.

It’s the first NCAA lacrosse title for the Bulldogs, although the Ivy League school was awarded a lacrosse “national championship” in 1883.
