Sobey Art Award announces five shortlisted finalists for $50,000 honour

TORONTO – Five artists working in a range of media and disciplines have made the short list for this year’s $50,000 Sobey Art Award.

Finalists include Lisa Lipton, who represents the Atlantic region, Jon Rafman of Quebec and Abbas Akhavan of Ontario.

Representing the Prairies and the North is Sarah Anne Johnson, and Raymond Boisjoly is the finalist for the West Coast and the Yukon.

The winner will be announced on Oct. 28.

Established in 2002, the award honours a Canadian artist age 40 or under who has exhibited in a public or commercial gallery within 18 months of being nominated.

The finalists’ works will be displayed at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia beginning Sept. 26.
