Hurricane Blanca slowly gains strength in Pacific off Mexico’s coast; expected to weaken soon
MIAMI – Hurricane Blanca has weakened slightly to a Category 2 storm but is slowly accelerating again in the eastern Pacific off Mexico’s coast.
The hurricane’s maximum sustained winds remained near 100 mph (155 kph) late Thursday. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says slight strengthening is possible during the next day or so, but weakening should begin by late Saturday.
Blanca is centred about 380 miles (610 kilometres) south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, and is moving north-northwest at about 8 mph (13 mph). It was about 690 miles (1,115 kilometres) south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
The Hurricane Center says swells likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions are affecting Mexico’s southwestern coast. They are projected to reach the Pacific coast of the Baja California peninsula, as well as the southern Gulf of California, on Friday.
