New Welcome to Vernon signs coming this spring

VERNON – Fresh new signs will soon greet visitors to the City of Vernon.

After sending plans back to the drawing board twice, Vernon council finally approved a design for the new boards yesterday, March 14.

The signs will replace their aging, deteriorating predecessors on the north end of Highway 97 by Swan Lake, at the south side of the city on Highway 97, and on Highway 6 coming into Vernon.

The signs, designed in collaboration with city staff and Tambellini Design Studios, will feature a combination of grey and coloured concrete bricks, and will be stamped for a wood effect ‘to reflect the natural and industrial history of the area.’

An interchangeable greeting sign will be located on a separate panel at the bottom of the sign, allowing messaging to be easily changed and updated.

“This would allow the city to change the sign’s messaging for specific times of the year or for specific city events,” the city states in a release. “The back of the signs would include the city’s logo and the words “City of Vernon” and “Come again” painted on the stamped concrete wall.”

Construction of the signs will begin in the spring of 2016.

The trim on Greater Vernon’s welcome signs could use a facelift, but local jurisdictions don’t know who’s responsible for maintaining them. Charlotte Helston
