Video shows why Kelowna Owls are B.C.’s best boys basketball team in decades

KELOWNA – If you were wondering how a Kelowna team managed to capture the most coveted high school basketball prize in the province, you're going to love this video highlight back of the AAAA boys championship game.

The Kelowna Owls became the first Interior team to win the provincial championship in Langley on Saturday, with a perfect record against B.C. teams and has been called one of the best Kelowna teams in decades.

B.C. High School Boys Basketball Association president Paul Eberhardt told The Province their defence was at a college level.

The #1 ranked Owls were unstoppable throughout the tournament, beating the #3 Tamanawis Wildcats 87-72 in the final.

“The way they play defence is at a higher level than any high school team I have seen in a long time,” Eberhardt told The Province. “They are relentless. They pressure the ball constantly.”

This is the Owl’s first championship and the first time a team outside Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland won since 1980.

Star forward Grant Shephard finished with 33 points and 22 rebounds, was named Player of the Game and tournament MVP. Future UBC Thunderbird and dual-sport athlete Parker Simson scored 15 points and was named Best Defensive Player and First Team all-star.
