Police urge drivers to be wary as motorcycles and bicycles reappear on South Okanagan roads

PENTICTON – An early spring warning from the RCMP's traffic services in the South Okanagan about the hazards on the road for cyclists and motorcyclists.

The warmer weather had people hopping on their bicycles and motorbikes, and Cpl. Ten Manchulenko has some reminders for two-wheel travellers.

Manchulenko says cyclists need to be wary of the gravel on the roads and shoulders, and the possibility of icy conditions, especially in the morning, and at higher elevations.

"Motorcyclists need to be aware motorists aren’t necessarily looking for them this time of year,” Manchulenko says. On the flip side, drivers need to keep an eye out for people motorcyles.

“Everybody should be paying attention,” he says.

On Sunday, March 13, two vehicles sideswiped each other on Highway 3A near Sheep Creek Road after encountering icy early morning conditions, police say. The two vehicles, a Hyundai Santa Fe and a 1990 Toyota Camry, sustained extensive damage to both vehicles’ passenger sides. No injuries were reported.

RCMP say on Monday, March 14, a woman ran into a retaining wall on Forestbrook Drive while travelling at a rate of approximately 40 kilometres an hour. The vehicle sustained extensive frontend damage.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
