Politicians and players show their support for Canada at Women’s World Cup

EDMONTON – From the Alberta premier to the B.C. Lions, Canadians showed their support Saturday for John Herdman’s team at the Women’s World Cup.

Canada opened the 24-team tournament with a game against China at Commonwealth Stadium.

“Go Team Canada! You make us proud,” tweeted newly elected Alberta Premier Rachel Notley before the game Saturday.

The CFL Lions tweeted photos showing players wearing Canada soccer scarves.

“Good luck today …. We’re with you! Rocking these scarves all day,” said the team tweet.

“From the Red & White to the Red & White — Good luck #canWNT,” added the Calgary Stampeders.

“You got our full support!” said Canadian men’s international striker Tosaint Ricketts.

“Wishing luck to our ladies at the World Cup opening game,” said Toronto FC midfielder Jonathan Osorio.

The CFL and the Edmonton Oilers were among others showing their support for the Canadian women via social media.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper weighed in Thursday with a statement plus a tweet that said: “All of Canada is cheering you on.”
