Newcomer Alex Sharp wins best actor in a play Tony Award for ‘Curious Incident’

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Alex Sharp, who plays a gifted mathematician with Asperger’s syndrome in “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” has won the Tony Award for best actor in a play.

The London-born actor beat out Bill Nighy of “Skylight,” Steven Boyer of “Hand to God,” Bradley Cooper in “The Elephant Man” and Ben Miles of the “Wolf Hall” saga.

Sharp, who spent the first seven years of his life travelling around Europe and the United States, graduated from The Juilliard School last summer and thought he’d be an unemployed actor for a decade.

The London import is based on an adaptation of Mark Haddon’s bestselling novel and was adapted by playwright Simon Stephens and directed by Marianne Elliott.
