Michael Cerveris wins best leading actor Tony Award for rich role of dad in ‘Fun Home’
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Michael Cerveris has won his second Tony Award for the haunted, conflicted lead in “Fun Home.”
He plays the closeted and suicidal father at the heart of the moving musical based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel memoir.
Cerveris beat out Robert Fairchild in “An American in Paris,” Brian d’Arcy James from “Something Rotten!” Ken Watanabe in “The King and I” and Tony Yazbeck in “On the Town.”
Cerveris has played John Wilkes Booth in “Assassins,” winning a best featured Tony in 2004. He’s also starred in the title roles of “Sweeney Todd” and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and played Juan Peron in “Evita.”
Cerveris, 54, attended Yale and played the lead in “The Who’s Tommy” over 1,400 times.
