Toronto Mayor John Tory says the city’s “animal-resistant” green bins are effective, despite a viral video of a clever raccoon breaking into one.
The clip this month shows the critter patiently turning the latch and lifting the lid of the bin, then diving in for a snack.
It’s been viewed more than 25,000 times.
Tory says more than 450,000 of the bins are located in the city, and reports of animals getting in are largely due to loose screws or other flaws.
However, the mayor jokingly warns that the video should be kept under wraps, lest knowledge of the break-in method spread throughout the raccoon population.
He says anyone thinking of sharing the clip should be mindful of Criminal Code provisions against “consorting with the enemy.”
