Metropolitan Museum of Art plans major retrospective of Irving Penn’s photographs in 2017
NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced plans for a major retrospective of Irving Penn’s photographs.
It said Friday that the exhibition will feature a promised gift of more than 150 images from The Irving Penn Foundation.
The museum’s current collection of Penn’s work consists of some 145 photographs.
The retrospective of more than 200 photographs will open in April 2017 to mark the centennial of Penn’s birth. It will later travel, beginning with the Grand Palais (PAL’-ay) in Paris.
The exhibition will represent every period of the artist’s 70-year career.
Penn is considered one of the 20th-century’s most influential photographers. His fashion and celebrity images graced the pages of Vogue. He was equally known for his photographs of labourers, nudes and still lifes.
He died in 2009.
