Motown Museum presents spoken-word performance event in Detroit as tribute to 1960s label

DETROIT – The Motown Museum is presenting an evening of performances that pays tribute to Motown Records’ spoken-word label of the 1960s.

Motown Mic: The Spoken Word will be held Saturday evening at The Music Hall in Detroit. The event will feature performances by 10 poets and artists selected as finalists from spoken-word events earlier this year.

The finalists will perform an original, Motown-inspired piece and judges will select a winner. The winner will receive $1,000 and have his or her piece published on a commemorative literary broadside.

Motown’s Black Forum Label was created for black expression and education. Its recordings included the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

The event is open to the public. Tickets are $15 in advance.
