Pair charged with confining woman in Edmonton home for refusing marriage
EDMONTON – Edmonton police say they have charged two people with attacking and confining a young woman in her home after she refused to participate in an arranged marriage.
Officers started investigating the case in February when they responded to a family dispute call at a house on the south side of the city.
Police say the 21-year-old woman was assaulted and kept in the home against her will because she would not agree to a marriage outside the country.
The hate crimes unit recently laid charges, but have not released more details about the case, including whether the two accused and the victim are related.
The 59-year-old man and 49-year-old woman each face charges of assault and forcible confinement.
The man is also charged with two counts of assault with a weapon.
They are to make their first court appearance Dec. 19.
