COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – A doctor says bodies of 12 inmates and nine wounded others were brought to hospital in Sri Lanka’s capital following a shootout between prisoners and security forces inside a prison.

Dr. Prasad Kariyawasam of Colombo National Hospital said Friday that he could not immediately comment on the condition of the wounded.

Sri Lankan security forces engaged in a gun battle Friday with rioting prisoners who appeared to have taken control of at least part of the prison in the capital, Colombo.
