Vandals hit Long Island memorial to fallen Navy SEAL
LAKE RONKONKOMA, N.Y. – Police on New York’s Long Island are looking for the vandals who damaged a stone memorial commemorating a Navy SEAL killed in Afghanistan in 2005.
Photos show the circular stone slab dedicated to Lt. Michael P. Murphy shattered into fragments. Suffolk County police said Thursday they were investigating the damage.
The plaque was installed in Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Park in Lake Ronkonkoma. The park was dedicated on May 7, 2006, on what would have been Murphy’s 30th birthday.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says in a statement that he is “appalled and disgusted” by the vandalism. Cuomo says the state will pay to replace the memorial.
Newsday reports that Murphy’s father, Daniel Murphy, says in a statement that the family is heartbroken by the damage to the memorial.
