Jury pool narrowed to 750 in church shooting trial
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The jury pool has been narrowed to just under 750 people in the federal trial of Dylann Roof, who stands charged in the shooting deaths of nine churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina.
Roof could face execution if convicted of hate crimes and obstruction of religion resulting in death, among other charges in the massacre inside Emanuel AME Church.
About 3,000 potential jurors were summoned, and began reporting this week. A total of 41 were excused or had their jury service moved.
But midday Wednesday, the court passed its goal of 700 when 748 potential jurors filled out questionnaires about the June, 2015 church shooting. The others who were summoned don’t have to report.
The questionnaires will be reviewed by attorneys before jurors return again in early November for individual questioning.
