Very local state of emergency cancelled

A state of emergency declared for a property along Mission Creek in the Joe Rich area has now been rescinded.

Emergency Management BC (EMBC) had made the request for the state of emergency last week. It was cancelled Friday afternoon.

Communications officer Bruce Smith says work to protect public infrastructure along Mission Creek has successfully and safely been completed.

The property impacted is in the 11200 block of Highway 33 east.

Officials with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure needed the state of emergency to access the property near Mission Creek and the Highway 33 bridge crossing the creek. They demolished and removed structures on the property. EMBC was worried the vacant house would be swept into the creek which could have damaged the bridge.

The heavy rain earlier this month turned Mission Creek into a raging river, sweeping several trailers on the property downstream and into the bridge. They have also been removed.
