Alaska state, federal game officials kill 4 of 5 bears moved from Anchorage to Kenai Peninsula

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Five black bears spared a death sentence after creating a nuisance in an Anchorage, Alaska, neighbourhood have come to an unhappy end.

Anchorage television station KTUU (http://bit.ly/1fuPUTZ) reports four of the five bears relocated to the Kenai Peninsula were killed Sunday or Monday after confrontations with people.

The sow and four cubs were destined for euthanasia in April after tearing up garbage in Anchorage’s Government Hill neighbourhood.

After a public outcry, Gov. Bill Walker asked if there was an alternative, and state game officials relocated the bears.

The bears soon were eating garbage in the community of Hope.

State and federal game officials took lethal action after a yearling bear Sunday climbed into a van as a man sat in the front seat.

One yearling remains at large.
